   they can use ” used ” parts as long as they do not charge for new parts

   I know that most auto body shops can use used parts if you request it. I’m not sure if your insurance would cover it but you might want to talk to an agent at your insurance agency to look into this. If you get used parts it can save you a lot of money so if they wouldn’t cover it, try weighing the costs to see which would be cheaper.

   Most auto body shops routinely will use “after market” parts. That are new parts usually made in China, or some other foreign country where the cost of labor is extremely low. . If you want new factory manufactured parts, also called “factory original” parts, that must be stated in the contract you sign. Some auto leases specify that collision damage MUST be done with factory parts.

   Used car parts shouldn’t be problematic for you. I’d suggest you stay away from aftermarket parts and it diminishes the value of your vehicle. If your insurance company insists, then get your state’s Department of Insurance involved.

   However, you’re screwed if your auto policy permits your insurance company to use aftermarket parts.
