Check American Motors or AMC
You are thinking about the American Motors Corporation, who made the Nash, Jeep, and a number of models under the AMC brand (e.g., Pacer, Eagle, Matador, Gremlin). AMC was bought out by Chrysler in about 1987, which is how they picked up Jeep, that survives today.
American motors and Jeep were a company during the 1960′s. They had the Rambler and the Hornet, pretty popular models but they could never compete well with the big companies like GM or Ford or Chrysler. Eventually in the 1970′s Chrysler bought them and thats why they now have Jeep.
That would probably be American Motors. They actually made decent vehicles — lots of style but also some of the weirdest cars ever built, i.e; the Pacer, the Gremlin and the Matador. They also built Jeep. Cash flow was always a problem with AM and they finally called it quits and sold off Jeep and liquidated assets with Chrysler corp.
I owned a ’68 AMX for many years. It was beautiful and stupid-fast. Man, I miss that car…
